Name:
Ewers
Location:
West House, Room 5
Appearance:
Represents a design that is of a Bird. They also contain a style of artwork painted onto the outer edges of the surface, depicting a Bird. The mouth of the Ewer is also shaped to be reminiscent of a bird. The Ewer also has a striped pattern at the neck, as well as, what has been described as, nipples on the front of the object. Most of the Ewers discovered utilise similar designs
Uses:
The Ewers would have most likely been used as a sort of wine or liquid container, most likely used to pour wine or decant it. *This Ewer could have been used at special occasions and feasts due to it's elaborate design.
Significance:
This type of pottery suggests to experts that the Minoans were quite adept at pottery, making elaborate and artistic designs for objects that may have been used for daily use.
Expert opinions:
The vase has been described as relating to fertility, as the ewer looks to have a large bottom section, imitating a pregnant woman. This could also be seen as the two features on the front of the ewer, appear to be imitating female breasts. (Anthony Bonnano
Scientific methods:
Radiocarbon dating as well as further study of archeologists, has properly dated the artefact, as well as x-ray procedures.
